Heaven as Taught in the Bible

The Bible teaches about heaven in very specific and rich ways. Through the descriptions of heaven in each book of the Bible, we can have deeper hope.

1. The Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew

Matthew used the expression 'Kingdom of Heaven' 36 times. This refers not only to the place we go after death but also to God's rule experienced on this earth through repentance and faith. "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near" (Matt 4:17).

2. Paradise in Luke

Luke used the terms 'Paradise' and 'Abraham's bosom.' Jesus told the thief on the cross, "Today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). This refers to the resting place saints enter immediately after death.

3. The Father's House in John

Jesus said, "My Father’s house has many rooms" (John 14:2). Heaven is the home where we will dwell forever, and the place where Jesus went to prepare a place for us.

4. The New Jerusalem in Revelation

Revelation describes heaven as the 'New Jerusalem.' It is the holy city coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband (Rev 21:2). It is the place of eternal fellowship between God and His saints.

5. The Better Country in Hebrews

Hebrews says the heroes of faith longed for a "better country—a heavenly one" (Heb 11:16). We are strangers and foreigners on this earth, but we have an eternal hometown, heaven, to return to.

6. The Kingdom of God in Paul's Epistles

Paul experienced the third heaven (paradise) and preached the 'Kingdom of God.' "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom 14:17).

7. The Holy Mountain in Psalms

Psalms calls the place where God is the 'Holy Hill' or 'Holy Mountain' (Psalm 2:6). To those who trust in the Lord, He gives this holy mountain, heaven, as an inheritance.
