When we think about heaven, we often wonder: who is there? What beings inhabit this eternal realm? Through Scripture, particularly the book of Revelation, we gain insights into the inhabitants of heaven.
God on the Throne
At the center of heaven sits God Himself on His throne. The book of Revelation describes lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder coming from the throne, revealing the majesty and power of the Almighty. This is the heart of heaven - the presence of God in all His glory.
The Holy Spirit
The seven spirits of God, representing the fullness and perfection of the Holy Spirit's ministry, are present in heaven. These seven lamps burning before the throne symbolize the complete work of the Spirit, illuminating all aspects of God's presence and purpose.
The Twenty-Four Elders
Around God's throne are twenty-four thrones, and seated on them are twenty-four elders clothed in white garments with golden crowns. These elders represent the fullness of God's redeemed people, worshiping Him continually.
The Angels
Angels play crucial roles in heaven. They serve as intermediaries, worship in the heavenly realm, deliver God's messages, and govern elements like water, fire, and wind. They execute God's salvation and judgment, carrying out His divine will throughout creation.
Those Written in the Lamb's Book of Life
Revelation 21:27 makes it clear: "Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life." Heaven's citizens are those who have been redeemed through faith in Christ.
A Place Without Evil
Heaven is characterized not only by who is there, but also by who is not there. No evil person will be found in heaven. No one will harm another or act wickedly. Instead, all will help and serve one another in perfect love.
The Centrality of Christ
As the great preacher Spurgeon once said, heaven without Christ would be like a day without the sun, a sea without water, or a night sky without stars. Christ is the reason heaven is heaven. He is the Lamb who was slain, worthy of all praise and honor forever.
Understanding who inhabits heaven helps us grasp what awaits us and motivates us to live lives worthy of such a calling. May we long for that day when we join the heavenly chorus in worship before the throne of God!
